Have you ever wondered why you are still alive? Think about it for a moment. At a time when a global pandemic has taken millions of lives and devastated families and economies in its wake, you are still breathing. Why? Why on earth are you still here? It’s a simple yet complicated question that people ask themselves everyday, but not many discover the answer. Also, is there just one specific answer or is it a multi-faceted answer? I’ll share my own journey of trying to figure this out.
For starters, I’ve always a had a curious mind since I was a child. My dad used to drop me off at school every morning and during our car rides, I used to ask him tons of questions. One I can still remember is “Daddy, who invented money?” (As you can tell, I speak money π΅π°π·….thihihi). I’m not sure what he told me, and thinking about it, I’m not sure he knew. But just so you know, according to online research, it was the Lydians who were the first Western culture to begin using coins to trade, around 700BC. On an unrelated note, (asking for a friendπ) ….who on earth are the Lydians? Do you know any Lydian? (Running back to Google…..ππ¨). Anyway, thank you Lydians! So back to my curious mind….my child-like curiosity did not stop when I grew up. The older I have become, the more I question things.
And one of the most raging questions I have asked myself a gazillion times (literally, a gazillion times!!!!) has been regarding my purpose- What was I created to do? Ironically, while seeking to discover my purpose, I was led into the path of becoming a Life, Leadership & Purpose Coach, which is the platform I use to help people discover their own purpose in life.
So how did I get here? First, I decided to be very intentional and pray concerning this. You see, God created you and I for a reason. He did not just put us on earth to occupy space for nothing, we were created for a purpose. Everything serves a purpose. And to best understand a thing’s purpose, you ask the producer or creator of the thing. So I decided to ask my Maker. And God begun to point me in the right direction. I realized that I love giving people advice, helping people solve problems and challenging people to be better.
If you are still trying to figure out what your purpose on earth is, here’s my take on how to discover it (this is my own advice based on my experiences):
1. Pray to God about it. Ask Him sincerely to show you His purpose for your life.
2. After praying, begin to pay attention. God speaks in different ways through different channels. For instance;
– You may find yourself discovering something new about yourself or your environment that sparks a new fire in your belly.
– You may discover a new passion or one you had shelved in the past that gets you excited and your juices flowing.
– You may find yourself interacting with a certain message that keeps recurring around you that will lead you in the right direction.
– You may discover a cause or problem that gets you so fired up you feel you could move mountains to solve.
3. Ask yourself when or where you feel most alive. What are you doing in those moments? That could point you in the right direction of your purpose.
4. Ask people around you what they notice about you and what they think you’re naturally good at. Of course these must be people who want the best for you and can be honest with you.
5. Lastly, I recommend you take a blank piece of paper and write down some of the stuff you feel you would love to do with your life. These are things that you feel are important to you and would give you meaning as you add value to others. A thought or idea could come to you that could open up your mind towards understanding your purpose.
Undeniably, the topic of purpose is a broad one with differing views, depending on who you ask. One thing for sure is that it will not go away anytime soon, so we might as well talk about it and share our different experiences and perspectives for the purposes of learning and growth.
As I conclude, I’d like to point out that I believe purpose serves a bigger audience than ourselves. It’s a service to humanity and it can come in different forms and at different times or seasons of our lives. My advice to you in your quest to discover your purpose is to let things flow. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. God is always looking out for you, He will guide you to your place of purpose and meaning in His own way.
I’ll leave it here with one of my favourite quotes by the late Dr. Myles Munroe: “Until you discover your personal reason for living, you will never be fulfilled.”
Always,
Posh π
